SARAH ADELLE McDONALD (SAM) BRUNSON (1939- )
Sarah Adelle McDonald (Sam), a native of Texas, the daughter of William Drury
McDonald and Viola Adelle Young, was born 6 August 1939 in Dallas, TX. She was
educated at William Lipscomb Elementary School, J. L. Long, Jr. High School,
Woodrow Wilson High School in Dallas, TX and four years at Oklahoma University.
Mrs. Brunson majored in Elementary Education and was a member of Kappa Phi, the
Methodist service sorority. She was a representative to the Association of Women
Students and was communications editor of the school yearbook, “The Sooner”, her
senior year.
Her mother was a charter member of the Dallas Chapter of Pilot Club
International and Sarah was mascot of the club. She was the only child born to any of the
members through 1958. She was mascot until she was 18 years of age.
She married William Thomas Brunson, Jr. on 10 June 1961 in Dallas, TX. In
their first year of marriage, they lived in Norman, OK. It was there Bill Brunson attended
Okalahoma University and received his MS degree. They lived in San Diego for about
two years while Mr. Brunson served in the navy. It at this time their son, William Drury
Brunson was born. They moved to Lynchburg December 7, 1964 when Mr. Brunson
began work for B&W.
Mrs. Brunson has kept busy through the years with various activities. She
belonged to a bowling league for a time. She enjoyed golf from 1970 to 2000.
Mrs. Brunson became active as a volunteer with the Lynchburg Public School
system for 13 years. She served on the board of the Friends of the Lynchburg Public
Library in various capacities. In 1988 she became a volunteer of the Lynchburg Museum
System.
Mrs. Brunson is a member of numerous hereditary societies, Daughters of the
American Revolution, and Colonial Dames of America 17th Century. She was a pastpresident and member of the Woman’s Club of Lynchburg and a member of the Fort Hill
Woman’s Club.
As a member of the Poplar Forest DAR Chapter, Mrs. Brunson has served as
Recording Secretary, Vice Regent and Regent and will be serving s Treasurer after her
term as Regent.
She is a member of PEO, BI Chapter (a service organization of women) and will
be Treasurer of that organization 2007-2008.
