LITTLE THEATER, LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA
The Little Theater League of Lynchburg, Virginia, was formed in 1920 by a group of
interested women. The first production, three one-act plays, was presented in 1921, and
was well received. On 3 February 1921, the first board of directors was elected, bylaws
were adopted and committees were appointed.
At first, the Little Theater met in the Hill City Masonic Hall. In 1922, the theater had
its own home, "a converted wing of an old tobacco warehouse on Sixth Street." The
theater group continued to work toward a more permanent theater building, and, in April
1930, ground was broken for a new facility on Rivermont Avenue. The first production
in the new theater was presented in December 1930. Lynchburg became "the first city in
Virginia to build its own amateur theatre." The Lynchburg group also assisted in the
formation of community theater groups in Altavista, Clifton Forge, and Radford, in
Virginia, and in Ronceverte, West Virginia.
In 1958, the Little Theatre, with the Civic Music Club and the Art Center, supported
the idea of a fine arts center with all of the arts under one roof. A new facility was
planned and was opened in 1962 as the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center. The Little Theatre,
"At the Sign of the Lamp," held its final productions in its home on Rivermont Avenue
and entered a new life as a part of the Lynchburg Fine Arts Center.
