DAWN OF PEACE – APPOMATTOX SURRENDER
Dawn of Peace is the typescript copy of a news article appearing in The Evening Star,
Washington, DC, on 5 April 1890, relating an eye-witness account of the surrender proceedings
at Appomattox Court House by George T. Peers, a merchant, clerk of the court, and resident of
Appomattox.
GEORGE T. PEERS (1830-1908)
George T. Peers, the son of Thomas R. Peers and Mary Petty, was born 19 June 1830.
He married 10 October 1855, in Lynchburg, Va., Caroline Virginia Sackett, the daughter of
Benjamin Franklin Sackett and Evalina Elisabeth Aiken. Peers was a merchant and served as
clerk of the court in Appomattox County, Va., from 1860 until his death. He died 14 November
1908, in Appomattox County and is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery, in Lynchburg.
