JAMES WINSTON WATTS (1833-1906)
James Winston WATTS, son of Richard Durrett WATTS and Isabelle NEWELL, was
born 19 April 1833 in Bedford County, Virginia. He married 22 February 1854 Mary
Elizabeth JONES, daughter of Fielding E. JONES and Sarah SPEAR.
James Winston WATTS enlisted as a First Lieutenant in Company A, 30th Regiment,
Virginia Volunteers, on 11 May 1861, in Liberty, Virginia. He was elected Captain on
10 October 1861. When the regiment was reorganized as the Second Virginia Cavalry,
Captain WATTS was commissioned as Lieutenant-Colonel and served "with distinction,"
until he was disabled in 1863 at Aldie, Virginia. He was assigned to the command of the
military post at Liberty, where he remained until the end of the war.
In 1865, James W. WATTS moved to Lynchburg, where he entered into partnership
with Richard T. WATTS, his brother, and George M. JONES, his brother-in-law, in the
formation of Jones, Watts and Company. The company had hardware stores in
Lynchburg, Danville, Bedford City, Salem, and Roanoke, and became the leading
hardware dealers for the western part of the state.
Following the sale of the company in 1887, the partnership continued their investment
in coal mining operations. James W. WATTS was president of the National Exchange
Bank and was a leading proponent for the establishment of the Lynchburg Cotton Mill.
He was elected to the city council in 1877 and again in 1902. He also served as president
of the board of police commissioners.
Col. James Winston WATTS died 3 December 1906 in Lynchburg, Virginia, and was
buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
