JOHN D. MURRELL (ca.1796-1856) ACCOUNT BOOK
The account book, kept by private banker, John D. MURRELL, contains accounts
(1819-1830) of the Ferry Bank at Lynch Dock, one of the first banks in Lynchburg,
Virginia.
JOHN D. MURRELL (ca.1796-1856)
John D. MURRELL, son of John MURRELL and Elizabeth DIEDRICK, was born ca.
1796, probably in Lynchburg, Virginia. His parents had moved to Lynchburg from Mt.
Holly, New Jersey in 1796. MURRELL never married. In 1850, he was listed as a
"speculator" living in Lynchburg. He died 23 March 1856 in New Orleans, Louisiana,
and at the time of his death "was, probably, the wealthiest man in Virginia, being worth,
as is supposed, fully two millions of dollars." He was buried in the Presbyterian
Cemetery in Lynchburg.
