KATE ELIZABETH BIAS COWAN (1857-1939)
Kate Elizabeth Bias was born 19 July 1857 in Red Sweet Springs, Alleghany County,
Virginia, the daughter of Cesario Bias and Mary Kate Gatewood. She was educated privately and
taught at several private schools in Virginia, Tennessee, and Ohio. She was appointed a foreign
missionary and served in Brazil from 1888 until 1919. She assisted in a girls’ school in Campinas,
Brazil. On 4 February 1892, she married a fellow missionary, Frank A. Cowan (1861-1894). After
her husband’s death in 1894, she assisted in opening a new missionary school. In 1919, she
returned to Lynchburg, Virginia, to spend time with her sister. In 1921, she returned to Brazil as
a missionary.
Kate Bias Cowan retired in 1928 after forty years of service in Brazil. She resided in
Lynchburg until her death on 14 December 1939. She was buried in Warm Springs Cemetery,
Warm Springs, Alleghany County, Virginia.
