Katherine B. Elliott, Marriage Records 1749–1840 Cumberland County, Virginia (South Hill, VA: Author,
1969), p. 139; "Lawrence Slaughter Marye," Robert H. Moore II, The Richmond Fayette, Hampden,
Thomas, and Blount's Lynchburg Artillery, 1st ed. (Lynchburg: H. E. Howard, 1991), p. 162; "A Partial

Maria W. WILSON married ca. 1858 Lawrence Slaughter MARYE. MARYE, son of
John Lawrence MARYE, Sr., and Ann Maria BURTON, was born October 1834, in
Fredericksburg, Virginia. [Census 1900, loc.cit.; Moore, Richmond Fayette..., loc.cit.]

Memphis, Tennessee, and in Lynchburg, Virginia. [Brock, Collections, loc.cit.]
In 1878, Lawrence S. MARYE was a lawyer in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and had

The MARYEs moved to Lynchburg, Virginia, ca. 1878, where Lawrence S. MARYE
practiced law. [J. P. Bell & Co.'s City Directory of Lynchburg Virginia 1879–'80 (Lynchburg: J. P. Bell,

n.d.), p. 134; Brock, Collections, loc.cit. MARYE "...has practiced law at Lynchburg, where he has resided
for the past eight years." Since COLLECTIONS was published in 1886, this would indicate that he had
resided in Lynchburg since ca. 1878.]

On 5 September 1883, an announcement appeared in the local newspaper that "Mrs.
MARYE's School for young ladies and girls [would] open on the 13th inst. [13

Mrs. MARYE conducted the school at her home for a number of years. ["Lawrence S.
Marye, home 301 5th Ave.; Mrs. L. S. Marye, school, 301 5th Ave." Chataigne's Lynchburg City Directory
1887–'88 (Richmond: Chataigne, 1887), p. 148; "Mrs. L. S. Marye, proprietress Lynchburg Academy, 607

No further advertisements for the school have been located in succeeding years.
In 1894, Lawrence S. MARYE resided at 1411 Church Street in Lynchburg. [Shole's
Directory of the City of Lynchburg (Lynchburg: J. P. Bell, 1894), p. 219.] Mr. MARYE delivered a
