AND GEORGE W. FORTUNE (1812-1893) PAPERS
The collection contains the Artillery Company Book of Captain Thomas Eubank
FORTUNE of Nelson County, Virginia. The book, dated 1813, includes notes on
furloughs, provisions, etc., during the War of 1812, accounts from a grist mill (18231841), and accounts and loose papers from the settlement of the estate of Mrs. Jane
FORTUNE (1874). Included in the loose papers is a school report for Margaret E.
FORTUNE (undated). Also included in the collection are a grist mill account book
(1835-1868), and the account book of George W. FORTUNE, concerning the settlement
of the estate of Thomas J. FORTUNE (1871-1873). Additional loose papers in the
collection include, among other items, the muster rolls for FORTUNE's company and a
copy of the pension application of his widow in 1871.

THOMAS EUBANK FORTUNE (ca.1782-1857)
Thomas Eubank FORTUNE, son of Thomas FORTUNE and Elizabeth EUBANK,
was born ca. 1782, in Amherst County, Virginia. He married (1) on 28 May 1803, in
Amherst County, Cynthia Rose Ann LOVING, daughter of John LOVING and Naomi
SEAY. He married (2) on 16 September 1810, in Nelson County, Virginia, Jane
McALEXANDER (born 14 January 1787, died ca. 1874), daughter of Alexander
McALEXANDER and Martha BURNETT.
Thomas E. FORTUNE served as Captain of an artillery company in the Second
Regiment at Fort Powhattan, Virginia. He was drafted at the Nelson Courthouse on 26
May 1813. His company was discharged at Fort Powhattan on 20 September 1813. For
his service, he received a land warrant for 80 acres.
Thomas Eubank FORTUNE died 14 March 1857 in Nelson County, Virginia.

GEORGE WILLIAM FORTUNE (1812-1893)
George William FORTUNE, son of Thomas Eubank FORTUNE and Jane
McALEXANDER, was born 25 March 1812 in Nelson County, Virginia. He was
educated by private tutors and married Nancy H. STEWART on 27 November 1837 in
Nelson County. She was born in November 1812 and died 28 March 1899. George
William Fortune died 19 January 1893.
