HERBERT BOULDIN HAWES (1872-1966)
Herbert Bouldin HAWES, son of Herbert Henry HAWES and Harriette Ann
BOULDIN, was born 19 November 1872 in Farmville, Prince Edward County, Virginia.
He was educated at Hampden-Sydney College and received his law degree from
Washington and Lee University in 1895. He practiced law in Bluefield, Mercer County,
Virginia, and became city attorney. He was later employed by publishers in Minnesota,
New York and Virginia, to write for law publications. He returned to Virginia in ca.
1933, where he worked for H. H. ECKENRODE, state historian in Richmond. He moved
to Lynchburg in ca. 1935.
Herbert B. HAWES married Bessie PRINCE, daughter of Burk PRINCE and Belle
HILL, of Hinton, Summers County, West Virginia.
In December 1936, the Board of Directors of the Lynchburg Sesqui-centennial
Commission voted to publish a history of the City of Lynchburg "as a memorial to the
150th anniversary celebration held in October." The Board contracted with publishers,
GARRETT and MASSIE, of Richmond, Virginia, for the production of the volume. The
publishers agreed that the first edition would be limited to one thousand copies. Herbert
Bouldin HAWES was selected by the publishers for the writing of the history and began
work on the project in 1937. By April 1938, he had completed the outline of the
manuscript and was scheduled to begin the writing of the text in May 1938, with the
finished work to be delivered to the publishers by 1 July 1938. The volume was never
published.
Herbert Bouldin HAWES died 2 February 1966 at his home in Lynchburg. He was
buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery.
