MISCELLANEOUS PAPERS ON MICROFILM
This microfilmed collection includes: the Thomas D. DAVIS journal (1865), which
includes some French lessons; Alexander BROWN's Quaker family genealogy (original
manuscript located in MS1914); Sue Clark TERRELL's Quaker papers (original
manuscript located in MS1784); Lynchburg Tax Records for 1813-1816 (original volume
is part of manuscript collection MS2030); and, records of the Garland-Rodes Camp, Sons
of Confederate Veterans (originally: United Confederate Veterans)(original records part
of manuscript collection MS1161).
THOMAS DIXON DAVIS (1843-1925)
Thomas Dixon DAVIS, son of George Dixon DAVIS and Mary Ann WILLS, was
born 16 April 1843, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Military
Institute, where he was a First Lieutenant in C Company of the New Market Corps. He
did not fight in the Battle of New Market as he was absent on leave "on account of family
affliction." He served as a Lieutenant in the Confederate States Army and was
transferred to the command of General Edwin LEE, where he was a member of the secret
service. Following the Civil War, he returned to Lynchburg, where he entered into the
hardware business with his father. [The journal entries date from August 1865 and
describe his travels in the South immediately after the War.] He later became Assistant
Postmaster for the City of Lynchburg.
Thomas D. DAVIS married 10 September 1877 Lulie BROWN, daughter of Josiah
BROWN and Althea GARLAND, of Selma, Alabama.
Thomas D. DAVIS later became cashier of the Krise Banking Company in
Lynchburg. He also served on the Lynchburg City Council from 1896 until his
resignation in 1900, when he became Clerk of the Court of the Corporation Court. He
served as Clerk until his death on 24 June 1925. He was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery.
