RETREAT FROM RICHMOND, 7 APRIL 1865, BY D.R. TOMPKINS
Only the flyleaf & pages 1-14 from The Poetical Works of Lord Byron (Philadelphia:
Jas. B. Smith, 1859), which had belonged to William Fitzhugh Rose of Lynchburg, VA,
[January 1861] are included. A note on the flyleaf by D.R. Tompkins indicates that he
had removed the book on April 7, 1865, from a wagon abandoned during the retreat from
Richmond. The note also says that he wished to exchange the book for food.
