The collection includes several miscellaneous accounts (1823-1856) of Rev. Abner
ANTHONY, a Baptist minister of Bedford County, Virginia.
REV. ABNER ANTHONY (1790-1884)
Abner ANTHONY, son of Rev. John ANTHONY and Susan AUSTIN, was born 16
September 1790, in Bedford County, Virginia. He was licensed to preach and was
ordained in 1829. He served as pastor of Staunton Baptist Church, as well as the
churches of Mt. Airy and Difficult Creek.
Abner ANTHONY married (1) 7 January 1822 Elizabeth C. EARLY, daughter of
Rev. Abner EARLY and Docia ANDERSON, of Bedford County. He married (2) 18
February 1836 Almira ARTHUR, daughter of Capt. Lewis C. ARTHUR, of Bedford
County.
Rev. Abner ANTHONY, considered to be "the most affluent Baptist minister in
Bedford County," had a plantation of 1,888 acres on the Staunton River, near the
conjunction of the counties of Bedford, Pittsylvania, and Franklin.
Abner ANTHONY died 3 March 1884.
