LETTER TO “MY DEAR DAD”, 17 OCTOBER 1918
Powell Glass, stationed in France in 1918, writes to his father, Carter Glass, staying at the
Hotel Meurice in Paris, concerning a possible visit while in France.
POWELL GLASS (1886-1945)
Powell Glass was born 9 October 1886, in Lynchburg, Virginia, the son of Carter Glass
and Aurelia McDearmon Caldwell. He was educated in Lynchburg and at Washington and Lee
University in Lexington, Virginia. He joined the staff of Lynchburg newspapers as a reporter
and managing editor. He served in France during World War I, 1914-1918, as Major of the First
Battalion, 317th Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces. He was assigned to the office of
public relations on the staff of the American commission to negotiate peace. He later retired
from active service as Lieutenant-Colonel and continued his position on the Lynchburg
newspapers. He also served as President of the Lynchburg Chamber of Commerce and served on
several special commissions for Virginia.
Powell Glass died 8 July, 1945, and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg,
Virginia.
