GETHSEMANE BAPTIST CHURCH (MADISON HEIGHTS, VA)
MINUTE BOOK
The minute book includes a brief history of the formation of the church as well as
minutes of church activities and membership lists 1874-1892. Later entries for 19321933 are brief reports of offerings.

GETHSEMANE BAPTIST CHURCH (MADISON HEIGHTS, VA)
Gethsemane Baptist Church was organized in 1874 with ten members,
including its pastor, John Thornton Rhodes. Ordained a minister of the Baptist Church in
Amherst County, Va. in 1866, Rhodes became pastor of Beulah Baptist Church in
Amherst County. When that church "ceased to exist," he organized Gethsemane Baptist
Church. After his death in 1895, members may have worshipped at other churches.
When Oakdale Baptist Church was established in 1910, many of the members of
Gethsemane Baptist may have moved to Oakdale. This would explain the minute book
being found with the records of Oakdale Baptist Church.
