CARTER GLASS LETTER TO E.H. EWART 1912
Carter Glass writes to a constituent, Edward Harvey Ewart, thanking him for a previous
letter, noting that Ewart had received the Daniel Memorials [Memorial addresses on the life and
character of John Warwick Daniel]. He also expresses his appreciation of Ewart’s support for
his candidacy for Congress.

GEORGE CARTER GLASS (1858-1946)
George Carter Glass was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, 4 January 1858, the son of Robert
Henry Glass and Augusta Elizabeth Christian. He attended private and public schools and was a
newspaper reporter, editor and owner of newspapers in Lynchburg.
Glass was a member of the Virginia State Senate from 1899 until 1903 and was a
delegate to the State constitutional convention in 1901. He was elected as a Democrat to
Congress, reelected and served from 1902 until 1918. He resigned to accept a cabinet position.
He served as chairman of the Committee on Banking and Currency. He was a member of the
Democratic National Committee 1916-1928. He was appointed Secretary of the Treasury and
served from 1918 to 1920. As a United States Senator, he served from 1920 until his death on
May 28, 1946 in Washington, D.C. He is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia.

EDWARD HARVEY EWART (1845-1925)
Edward Harvey Ewart was born in Campbell County, Virginia 9 May 1845, the son of
James Ewart and Susan Butler. He was a Confederate veteran, having served with Company B,
Eleventh Virginia Infantry, Pickett’s Division in the Confederate army, and he was an officer of
the Garland-Rodes Camp, Confederate Veterans.
As a member of the Lynchburg Common Council, he worked to support a municipal
filtration plant, which is the present method of treating the city water in Lynchburg.
E. H. Ewart died 28 February 1925 and is buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg,
Virginia.
