SARAH WINSTON HENRY BRANCH, APVA
The Sarah Winston Henry Branch of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia
Antiquities (APVA) was formed in the Lynchburg-Amherst County area in 1965. The
official date of enrollment with APVA was 5 October 1965. Dr. Roberta D.
CORNELIUS, Professor of English at Randolph-Macon Woman's College, was
appointed Branch director. The primary aim of the establishment of the Branch was to
seek the restoration and preservation of historic buildings and sites in the area.
The initial project of the Sarah Winston Henry Branch was the restoration and
preservation of the cemetery at Winton, in Amherst County, the home of Sarah Winston
HENRY. Following the cleaning and restoration of the site, a brick wall was erected to
protect the cemetery. Eventually, a trust fund was established for the perpetual care of
the site.
Over the years, the Sarah Winston Henry Branch has sponsored walking tours of the
historic areas in the City of Lynchburg and has sponsored lectures on historic
preservation for the community.
In 1981, the Branch sponsored the publication of Lynchburg: An Architectural
History, by Al S. CHAMBERS. In 1985, the group sponsored the publication of Tour
Lynchburg, a guide to the historic sites of the city.
The Sarah Winston Henry Branch of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia
Antiquities, known as Preservation Virginia, was dissolved on 27 March 2012.
