TAX BOOK FOR 1826 OF W.C. MOSELEY
The leather bound book includes a rough alphabetical listing of taxpayers of
Buckingham County, VA, for 1826, which was kept by W.C. Moseley. It includes the
amount of taxes owed for land, slaves, horses, and levies. There is also a note as to when
the taxes were paid. No indication of where the taxpayers lived is listed; however, the
names of most are listed in the 1830 U.S. Census for Buckingham County, Virginia.
W. C. MOSELEY
Any additional information on W. C. Moseley is unclear. The men whose names
appear in the "Tax Book for 1826" are listed in District No. 1 of the land tax records for
Buckingham County for 1826. However, there are two William Moseley, Jr. listings. No
middle initial is given for either. ["Buckingham County Land Taxes," Virginia County Land Tax
Records, (Library of Virginia microfilm #135028), List A.]

William C. Moseley did buy land in Buckingham County in 1832 and 1837. He sold
property there in 1836 and 1838; the first parcel being 3 miles west of the courthouse and
on the Slate River; the latter, 8 miles southwest of the courthouse. [Roger G. Ward, Land Tax
Summaries & Implied Deeds, 1815-1840, Vol. 2 (Athens, GA: Iberian Publishing Co., 1994), p. 253.]
