“ENEMIES OF THE WILL”
The printed leaflet, “Enemies of the will,” is based on a newspaper clipping found in the
pocketbook of a V.M.I. (1915) graduate who met an accidental death Saturday, April 22, 1916,
and is perhaps printed in his memory. This unknown graduate has been identified as William
Campbell Hagan (1894-1916). The original source of the clipping is unknown at present.
WILLIAM CAMPBELL HAGAN (1894-1916)
William Campbell Hagan, born 24 September 1894 in Richmond, Virginia, son of John
Campbell Christian Hagan and Alice May Hipe. He matriculated 11 September 1911 at Virginia
Military Institute in Lexington and graduated June 13, 1915. Following graduation, he was
employed by the Appalachian Power Company. He died 22 April 1916 at Elkhorn, West Virginia,
after an accidental electrocution at a newly constructed power substation. He was buried in
Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond.
An interesting note on Hagan from The Bomb, 1915 (V.M.I.), p. 72: “We predict for this
young man a brilliant (electric lights are always brilliant) future in his chosen profession.”

Accidental Death
William C. Hagan Killed by Contact with Live Wires at Elkhorn
Bluefield, W. Va., April 22 – (Special) – William C. Hagan, an employee of the Appalachian
Power Company, was electrocuted at the sub-station at the Houston Coal company’s operation
at Elkhorn this morning. It is not known how he came in contact with the high voltage wires, as
it was early in the morning and no one was present. Two colored boys outside the station heard
a cry and going in found his body. The body of young Hagan was found behind the switchboard,
and officials were unable to account for him being in that position. The only mark found on the
body was a small place on the first joint of the little finger and a small spot was found on the
bottom of one shoe. Hagan is of a prominent Richmond, Va., family, and was popular in this
section. The remains were shipped to Richmond for interment. The substation was a new one
and had only been in operation since Friday.
