JONES – STERLING FAMILY COLLECTION
The collection includes two farm journals (1831-1851) kept by James T. Jones
(1789-1879) of Fluvanna County, Virginia; one book of French lessons (1852-1854) of
Sallie Willie Jones; one diary (1867-1875) of Mary E. Jones; 27 diaries (1878-1946) of
Mary Otway Sterling of Charlottesville, Virginia (completed by Sallie Willie Sterling
Allen in 1946); one diary (1879) and memory book of Lucia Green Sterling Allen;
miscellaneous papers and letters; and a genealogical report on the Jones family of
Fluvanna County, Virginia.
The collection has remained in the Jones and Sterling families since 1831. The
donor, Frances Wallace Allen Kirby (1904-2004) was the niece of Mary Otway Sterling
(1868-1946), the granddaughter of Sallie Willie Jones Sterling (1837-1907) and the greatgrand-niece of James T. Jones (1789-1879). At her death, Mrs. Kirby bequeathed the
collection to Jones Memorial Library.

The collection has remained in the Jones and Sterling families since 1831.
Frances Wallace Allen Kirby (1904-2004) is the niece of Mary Otway Sterling (18681946), the granddaughter of Sallie Willie Jones Sterling (1837-1907) and the great-grandniece of James T. Jones (1789-1879).

JAMES T. JONES (1789-1879)
James T. Jones, son of George Jones and Elizabeth Wilson of Prince Georges County,
Maryland, was born February 1, 1789 in Maryland. He moved with his parents to
Fluvanna County, Virginia, before 1800. He married Sarah S. Richardson, daughter of
James Richardson and Nancy Payne, on March 19, 1818, in Fluvanna County. They
were the parents of nine children.
James T. Jones died May 31, 1879, in Fluvanna County and was buried on the “old
Jones place.”

MARY E. JONES (1834-1894)
Mary E. Jones, daughter of Robert Sharp Jones (half-brother of James T. Jones) and
Mildred Duke Crewdson, was born June 7, 1834, in Fluvanna County, Virginia. She was
a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. She died July 11, 1894, in Charlottesville,
Virginia, and was buried at Maplewood Cemetery.

SALLIE WILLIE JONES STERLING (1837-1907)
Sallie Willie Jones, daughter of Robert Sharp Jones and Mildred Duke Crewdson, was
born December 25, 1837, in Albemarle County, Virginia. She married Charles Henry
Sterling, son of Otway Sterling and Cathering Yeakle, on October 27, 1859, in
Charlottesville, Virginia. She died November 29, 1907, in Charlottesville.

MARY OTWAY STERLING (1868-1946)
Mary Otway Sterling, daughter of Charles Henry Sterling and Sallie Willie Jones, was
born March 1, 1868 in Charlottesville, Virginia. She died January 4, 1946, in
Charlottesville and was buried in Maplewood Cemetery.

SALLIE WILLIE STERLING (1870-1963)
Sallie Willie Sterling, daughter of Charles Henry Sterling and Sallie Willie Jones, was
born February 1870 in Charlottesville, Virginia. She attended Randolph-Macon
Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia, where she majored in music. She died in 1963
and was buried in Maplewood Cemetery, Charlottesville.
