LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA 24501

NANCY JANE JAMERSON WEILAND (1947-

)

Nancy Jane Jamerson, a native of Pamplin, Virginia, the daughter of Kester
Winfred Jamerson and Cora Ellen Williams of Appomattox County, Virginia, was born
19 September 1947 in Lynchburg, Virginia. She was educated in Appomattox County
and studied at Phillips Business College in Lynchburg. She also studied in the Famous
Writers School. She married William Luther Weiland, son of Frank Weiland and Ruby
Carwile, on 24 July 1983 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
During her career, Mrs. Weiland has worked as Administrative Assistant at the
Lynchburg Fine Arts Center and as Office Manager of the Lynchburg Historical
Foundation. In 1996, she began working at Jones Memorial Library, first as an
administrative assistant and later as a research assistant. She served on the Board of
Historic and Architectural Review for the City of Lynchburg from 1990 until 2000.
Mrs. Weiland has also served in various offices in the Garland Hill Neighborhood
Association. Garland Hill is an historic district in Lynchburg and the Association works
to preserve, rehabilitate, and maintain the architectural richness of the district. She also
served on the Community Development Advisory Committee and the Neighborhood
Resources Committee for Lynchburg.
Mrs. Weiland is a member of numerous hereditary societies, including United
Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Colonial
Dames of America 17th Century. She is also a member, past-president and director of
the Woman’s Club of Lynchburg.
Along with numerous volunteer activities in Lynchburg, Mrs. Weiland is also a
published author and has written numerous articles for Lynch’s Ferry, a local historical
magazine. She first published History of Pamplin, Virginia in 1970. The book has been
revised and reprinted several times. She has also been an instructor in beginning
genealogy.
Among her many accomplishments is her research into the history of prostitution
in the City of Lynchburg. She began her research on the “Bawdy Ladies” in 1982. Her
portrayal of “Lizzie Langley”, a 19th-century Madam, at the City Cemetery sparked great
interest in the “Ladies,” and she has been guest speaker on the topic to several area
organizations.
