SAMUEL ALLEN CHAMBERS, JR. (1940-

)

Samuel Allen Chambers, Jr., son of Samuel Allen Chambers, Sr., and Edith Lynn
McWane, was born 24 March 1940, in Lynchburg, Virginia. He graduated from E.C.
Glass High School, and received a B.A. from Princeton University in 1962. He also
received a Master of Arts Degree in Architectural History from the University of Virginia
in 1969.
Chambers assisted in the restoration of historic properties with J. Everette Fauber,
Jr., of Lynchburg from 1966 until 1969. He also served as architectural historian for the
National Register of Historic Places (1969-1972) and served as senior architectural
historian for the Historic American Buildings Survey (1971-1987). An active contributor
to the historic preservation field, he has served on the boards of the Foundation for the
Preservation of Historic Georgetown and the Tudor Place Foundation. He served as a
member of the Board of Directors of Octagon, the headquarters house/museum of the
American Institute of Architects. Chambers is a member of the National Trust for
Historic Preservation, a member of the International Council on Monuments and Sites,
and is a consultant for the Virginia Historic Landmarks Commission.
Al Chambers was instrumental in founding the Historic Lynchburg Foundation in
1967 which later merged with the Lynchburg Historical Society to form the Lynchburg
Historical Foundation. He served as a member of the historic events and redevelopment
committee for the Lynchburg Bicentennial Commission. He was an early supporter of
the effort to restore Lynchburg’s landmark Academy theater and was a founder and
member of the Friends of the Academy. He has also served on the Board of Directors for
Point of Honor. In the early 1980s, he was project director for the Lynchburg
Architectural Archives, housed at Jones Memorial Library.
Chambers has specialized in the study and preservation of historic resources in
Virginia and West Virginia. He is the author of numerous articles and books relating to
historic architecture including, Architecture of Carson City, Nevada (1972), Lynchburg:
an Architectural History (1981), National Landmarks, America’s Treasures (2000), What
Style Is It? A Guide To American Architecture (several editions 1983-2003), Poplar
Forest and Thomas Jefferson (1993), and Buildings of West Virginia (2004). He has also
been consultant or editor of numerous books on historic buildings.
In 1969, Al Chambers married Bettye Thomas, daughter of Alsen D. Thomas and
Frances Nelson Hillsman in Lynchburg, Virginia.
