FRIENDS OF LYNCHBURG (VA.) STREAM VALLEYS
Lynchburg, Virginia, sitting on the bank of the James River, is a hilly city
containing seven streams within its city limits. Concerned citizens recognized that to
watchdog encroaching detrimental development and to work for preservation laws in just
the one valley of Blackwater Creek would be a full-time job. Accordingly, as a result of
a mass meeting sponsored by the League of Women Voters on August 9, 1973, a steering
committee was selected to prepare proposed by-laws and to plan for the formulation of a
volunteer organization called Friends of Lynchburg Stream Valleys.
The purposes of Friends of Lynchburg Stream Valleys are to protect, preserve and
appropriate natural recreational uses in the stream valleys in and near the city of
Lynchburg, Virginia; to stimulate private gifts, endowments and bequests for this
purpose; and to encourage appropriate use of Lynchburg’s stream valleys and related
open areas.
