EUBANK NOTES, 186?
Notes are not addressed to an individual. Instructions are given for shipping “Tom” home,
perhaps providing funding for the transportation of a soldier. In a separate section the
correspondent asks that General Nicholls be informed of the condition of the lower South Side
Bridge for supporting artillery and the condition of the Campbell Court House road.
The notes are written on a small paper perhaps previously used for another purpose. The
notes are signed E.E. On the reverse side of the paper is found “E.N. Eubank, Lynchburg, Va.
1864 1865 C.A. Holcombe Commissioner Revenue 1st District.” E.E. appears to be Elias Eubank
and the time period would appear to be around 1864 after General Nicholls was assigned to
Lynchburg, Va. (1862-1864).

ELIAS NEWMAN EUBANK
Elias Newman Eubank was born in 1825 in Amherst County, Virginia. He was the son of
Thomas N. Eubank. In 1844, at age 19, he went to Missouri to work and engaged in business in
Pike County. There he met and married Caroline Cannon. He went to California during the gold
rush.
Eubank and his family returned to Lynchburg, Virginia in 1852, where Elias worked as a
toll collector for the James River & Kanawha Canal Company. During the Civil War, he served
in the Quartermaster department. Following the war, he served as Commissioner of Revenue for
the City of Lynchburg. He later moved to Newport News to live with his son, but returned in the
summers to stay with relatives in Amherst County. He also served as assistant secretary of the
Lynchburg Fair.
Elias Newman Eubank died November 13, 1909, and was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery
in Lynchburg.

Let Gen’l Nicholls know that lower South Side bridge has been arranged so artillery can cross that
artillery can be passed over it by hand, you had also better inform him, a few days in advance,
when the work on Campbell Co. Ho. [Court House] Road will be completed so he can determine
when he will move the force. The timber has not yet been felled around that work to the extent
that Gen. N. wants it.
