COMMERCIAL HOUSE PLANS
The collection includes two booklets, A Choice Selection of Small Homes and Planned
Homes of Individual Design. The booklets contain presentations of various floor plans with
color illustrations of various house styles, including Easton, Edly, Emir, Enock, Exon and Extol,
among many others, representing various styles in housing architecture. Both booklets were
issued by, or in conjunction with, Campbell-Payne, Inc., of Lynchburg, Va., and were probably
issued during the post-war period (1945-1949).
The date/s of the publications is based on information concerning Campbell-Payne, Inc.
of Lynchburg, Va. The company had the telephone number 954 during the period 1932-1949,
and this number is imprinted on the front covers of the booklets.
The booklets were originally bound with plastic spiral binding, now missing; evidence of
insect damage on both; pages are missing in second booklet (Planned homes of individual
design).
NATIONAL PLAN SERVICE INC., CHICAGO, ILLINOIS
The National Plan Service (1902-1997) was a prominent house plan company in
Chicago, Ill. The Service specialized in middle-class house designs and worked to meet the huge
demand for homes, especially during the post-war years. In collaboration with lumber and
building suppliers, they printed booklets containing various sets of plans for distribution to home
builders in an effort to entice them to purchase the complete plans and materials. Usually, the
booklets bore the name and contact information of the building supplier.
CAMPBELL-PAYNE, INC., LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA
In 1931, Adams Bros.–Paynes Company, Inc. had an extensive building materials
operation at 1760 Park Avenue at Kemper Street. In that year, the operating officers were:
Charles S. Adams, president, Harry L. Campbell, vice-president, and John G. Payne, secretarytreasurer. In 1932, Campbell-Payne, Inc., was organized at the same location with J. Gordon
Payne, president, A. Maynard Campbell, Jr., vice-president, and Alice R. Eberhart, secretarytreasurer. By 1937, the operation had moved to 13th Street and Stephenson Avenue.
