Charles Edward Ambler MARSHALL, Jr., a descendant of Simon Peter HULLIHEN
of West Virginia, was asked by the HULLIHEN Memorial Lecture Committee at West
Virginia University to prepare a genealogical chart of the HULLIHEN family. This
collection includes correspondence, genealogical information and miscellaneous
photographs accumulated during the preparation of the chart.

CHARLES EDWARD AMBLER MARSHALL, JR. (1905-aft.1976)
Charles Edward Ambler MARSHALL, Jr., son of Rev. Charles Edward Ambler
MARSHALL, Sr., and Mary Louise HULLIHEN, was born 10 June 1905 in Staunton,
Virginia. He was baptized at Trinity Episcopal Church, Shepherdstown, West Virginia,
on 8 October 1905. He attended Virginia Episcopal School, Lynchburg, Virginia, from
1922 until 1924.
A descendant of Simon Peter HULLIHEN, the "Father of Oral Surgery," Charles E. A.
MARSHALL, Jr., was asked by the Hullihen Memorial Lecture Committee at the West
Virginia University School of Dentistry to prepare a genealogical chart of the
HULLIHEN family to be placed at the school.
Nothing further is known of Charles Edward Ambler MARSHALL, Jr., at present.

SIMON PETER HULLIHEN (1810-1857)
Simon Peter HULLIHEN, son of Thomas HULLIHEN and Rebecca FREEZE, was
born 10 December 1810 in Point Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. In
1832, he received his medical degree from Washington College in Baltimore, Maryland,
and began the practice of surgery in Canton, Ohio. In 1835, he married Elizabeth
FUNDENBURG of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They later moved to Wheeling, West
Virginia, where he continued his work in oral surgery.
While at Wheeling, Dr. HULLIHEN was instrumental in the founding of the
Wheeling Hospital. He also served on the city council and was a trustee for the Linsley
Military Institute. During his medical practice, he made significant contributions in
surgery for cleft palate, harelip, and deformities of the jaw, nose and lips. He also
invented many dental and surgical instruments.
Dr. Simon Peter HULLIHEN wrote numerous articles for medical journals, including
"Harelip and its Treatment (1844)," "Cleft Palate and its Treatment (1845)," and
"Abscess of the Jaws and its Treatment (1846)." He died of typhoid pneumonia on 27
March 1857 and was buried in the Mt. Wood Cemetery in Wheeling.
