LYNCHBURG (VA.) WEATHER STATION
The weather station in Lynchburg, Virginia, was established 24 May 1871, by the
Signal Corps of the United States Army. The purpose of the station was to "[note] the
development and progress of storms and other meteorological phenomena and [report]
the same to the public with predictions of probably future atmospheric conditions." The
first office of the weather station was at Eleventh and Main Streets in Lynchburg.
Between 1890 and 1913, the station was operated in the Law Building at 807 Main
Street. From 1913 until 1944, when it was moved to the Preston Glenn Airport (later
Lynchburg Municipal Airport), it was operated in the Peoples National Bank Building at
Eighth and Main Streets. During the Depression, the office was closed from July 1933
until November 1936.
The Signal Corps maintained the weather station until 18 June 1889 when it
began to be operated by the Weather Bureau, a division of the Department of Agriculture.
It was operated under the Department of Agriculture until 1940, when it was changed to
the Department of Commerce.
With advances in technology, and with budgetary constraints, the operation of the
weather station has been gradually phased out in Lynchburg. Weather services are now
(1998) provided from the station at Blacksburg, Virginia.
