PIEDMONT MILLS, INC.
Early in the history of the city of Lynchburg, milling operations began in ca. 1812 on
the site of Horseford Run as it emptied into the James River. Although early records are
unclear as to the original owner or owners of the mill, it was in operation at this location
when the James River and Kanawha Canal was built in 1835. Deed records indicate that
the mill was owned by the LANGHORNE family before 1840. In 1860, John L.
LANGHORNE sold his interests in the mill to William L. MORRIS. MORRIS operated
the mill for a few years and sold his interests to William M. LANGHORNE and Charles
L. LANGHORNE in 1867. Later that year, Charles L. LANGHORNE became sole
proprietor of the mill.
In 1873, Charles L. LANGHORNE transferred his interests in the mill to Charles M.
BLACKFORD to secure a deed of trust. The property was eventually sold at public
auction and was purchased by Stephen C. HURT and his son William HURT in 1875.
Stephen C. HURT died intestate on 6 April 1898 and the property was transferred to
William HURT. In 1905, William HURT sold his interests to Piedmont Mills, Inc., a
corporation formed that same year. Piedmont Mills, Inc., sought to improve production
with several modernization efforts and operated the mill until 1976, when the operation
was sold to Bartlett and Company Grain of Kansas City, Missouri. By 1983, the mill was
producing 60 million pounds of flour each year. The mill ceased operation a few years
later.

STEPHEN C. HURT (1819-1898)
Stephen Clifton HURT, son of William HURT and Mary Elizabeth PRESTON, was
born 9 February 1819 in Bedford County, Virginia. He operated a dry goods store at
Chamblissburg, Bedford County, before moving to Lynchburg in ca. 1846. In lynchburg,
he was partner in the firm of HURT and PRESTON (later McDANIEL, HURT, and
PRESTON), dealers in groceries.
Stephen C. HURT married 14 December 1843 Maria Frances CRENSHAW, daughter
of Samuel H. CRENSHAW and Priscilla JONES of Bedford County.
Stephen C. HURT purchased the mill property of Charles L. LANGHORNE at
auction in 1875 and operated the mill under the name of S.C. HURT, then HURT and
CRENSHAW, and finally as S.C. HURT and Son.
Stephen C. HURT died 6 April 1898 at his home in Lynchburg.
