JAMES LANIER CARTER (1909-1987)
James Lanier CARTER, son of Chesley Lanier CARTER and Mary Belle MOON,
was born 18 February 1989, in Chatham, Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He attended the
University of Virginia and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Raleigh.
He married 8 September 1934, in Chatham, Jewel Anderson RAMSEY, daughter of W.
E. RAMSEY and Nannie ANDERSON, of Pittsylvania County.
During World War II, James L. CARTER served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.
An investment banker and owner of an antique store in Lynchburg, James L.
CARTER was actively involved in the Lynchburg Bird Club, the Society of Colonial
Wars, and the Society of the Cincinnati. He died 30 August 1987, in Lynchburg, and was
buried in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
