ROBERT E. CRAIGHILL CAMP, NO. 11
DEPARTMENT OF VIRGINIA
UNITED SPANISH WAR VETERANS
The Robert E. CRAIGHILL Camp, No. 11, United Spanish War Veterans (USWV),
was chartered on 28 May 1927 at Lynchburg, Virginia. Membership was open to
veterans from all branches of service, who fought in the War with Spain (SpanishAmerican War) and who had received an honorable discharge from the service.
The local camp assumed the responsibility of the welfare of its members, "assisting in
obtaining pensions, hospitalization, burial [expenses] and in any other way they can be of
service."
In 1936, and again in 1942, the R. E. CRAIGHILL Camp, No. 11, was host to the
annual encampment for Virginia. Both encampments were financed entirely by the
members of the local camp. In 1940, a memorial to the soldiers, sailors, and marines who
fought in the War with Spain was placed on Monument Terrace, in Lynchburg.
In 1940, L. E. WINGFIELD of the CRAIGHILL Camp was instrumental in the
organization of the Seventh Army Corps Veterans Association. During the annual
encampment in 1940, in Staunton, Virginia, he presented the idea of a veterans
association and was elected President of the Association. The Association eventually
became a national organization with members in more than twenty states.
The last minutes recorded for R. E. CRAIGHILL Camp, No. 11, were on 8 May 1952.
Nothing further is known of the Camp at present.
