CITY CEMETERY
In 1806, John LYNCH and his wife Mary conveyed a parcel of land, amounting to one
acre, to the City of Lynchburg "to be used, preferably, as a cemetery for the inhabitants of
Lynchburg, or as the building site of a house of worship." The first grave was opened on
5 July 1806. Through the years more land was added to the property until it totalled
25.86 acres in 1965. In addition to ordinary burials, the cemetery is noted for its large
Confederate burial grounds. Over 2,000 soldiers are buried in this section.
The story of the City Cemetery, also known as the "Old Methodist Cemetery," is
recorded in Behind the Old Brick Wall: A Cemetery Story, compiled by Lucy Harrison
Miller BABER, with research and writing by Evelyn Lee MOORE.
