DAMERON FAMILY PAPERS
The collection contains the papers of George Henry DAMERON (1822-1884) and of
his son, Charles Walter DAMERON (1856-1931), of Amherst County, Virginia.
Included are correspondence, deeds, wills, and other miscellaneous papers. Of special
interest are a plat of the town of Bethel in Amherst County and the commutation of the
sentence of Powhatan ELLIS.

GEORGE HENRY DAMERON (1822-1884)
George Henry DAMERON, son of Charles DAMERON and Mary E. MAGANN, was
born 16 June 1822 in Amherst County, Virginia. He married 24 November 1852 Frances
Ann SCOTT, daughter of William Waller SCOTT and Eliza Ann PENDLETON of
Amherst County.
During the Civil War, George H. DAMERON tried to enlist in the service, but was
turned down for active duty due to his health. He did serve with the reserve forces in
Amherst County throughout the war.
A farmer of Amherst County, George H. DAMERON also served as sheriff and
treasurer of the county. In 1880, he was the census enumerator for a portion of the Elon
District in the county. He died 22 July 1884 and was buried in the Scott family cemetery.
[Obituary, Lynchburg Virginian 23 July 1884, p. 1 col. 3. The obituary states that he was "aged about 60"
which would imply a birth date of ca. 1824. "Old Scott Cemetery," Mss., FF3704, Jones Memorial Library,
Lynchburg, VA (JML). The tombstone indicates a birth date of 16 June 1821. 1880 Census, Amherst
County, VA, T-9, Roll 1353, p. 164, Dwelling 1, Family 1. G. H. Dameron, age 57 years. This would
indicate a birth year of ca. 1823. "Marriage of Capt. George H. Damron [sic] and Fannie A. Scott,"

CHARLES WALTER DAMERON (1856-1931)
Charles Walter DAMERON, son of George Henry DAMERON and Frances Ann
SCOTT, was born 26 October 1856 in Amherst County, Virginia. He married 15
September 1893 Gertrude M. DAMERON, daughter of Zachariah DAMERON and
Margaret Willis RUCKER of Amherst County. In 1910, Charles W. and Gertrude
DAMERON adopted Henry NOEL, son of Ella NOEL, and changed his name to George
Henry DAMERON. They "also raised a foster daughter, Mary Elizabeth DAMERON."
Charles Walter DAMERON died 10 May 1931 in Amherst County and was buried in
the Elon Presbyterian Church cemetery.
