KEEP LYNCHBURG BEAUTIFUL COMMISSION
The Keep Lynchburg Beautiful Commission was established by the Lynchburg,
Virginia, City Council on 22 August 1967. The new Commission was affiliated with
Keep Virginia Beautiful, Inc., and Keep America Beautiful, Inc. Prior to this time,
"beautification projects [were] limited in Lynchburg to...spring and fall clean up weeks,
the sale of brooms by the Lions clubs, garden club activities and more isolated events."
The Commission has worked with city employees and the Forestry Advisory Board on
the various projects proposed for beautification in Lynchburg.
Under the auspices of the Lynchburg Garden Club, Operation Plant-A-Tree began in
1980. Through recycling efforts, money was raised to fund the planting of trees in
Lynchburg. In 1990, Operation Plant-A-Tree was taken over by the Keep Lynchburg
Beautiful Commission.
