JOHN H. LEWIS (1841–1907) LETTERPRESS BOOK
The collection consists of one letterpress book (ca. 1875) belonging to John H.
LEWIS, lawyer of Lynchburg, Virginia. The book is indexed and includes letters to his
brother, William Schoolfield LEWIS (1851–1908), and to his sister, Nannie Virginia
(LEWIS) BEALL (1847–1920). Also included is one blank form letter from the "Office
of John H. LEWIS, Attorney and Counsellor at Law, No. 159 Main Street, Lynchburg,
Va."
JOHN HENRY LEWIS (1841–1907)
John Henry LEWIS, son of Henry Harrison LEWIS and Lucy Maria
SCHOOLFIELD) DAVIS, was born 30 January 1841 in Lynchburg, Virginia. He was
graduated from Old Lynchburg College with his A.B. degree in 1860 and entered the law
school of the University of Virginia. He became a member of the Lynchburg Home
Guard, Company G of the 11th Virginia Infantry at the start of the Civil War. He was
later transferred to the 20th Battalion, Virginia Heavy Artillery, as a Second Lieutenant.
He was wounded and captured at Saylor's Creek in April 1865. He was imprisoned at
Johnson's Island until June of that year.
John H. LEWIS returned to the University of Virginia to complete his law degree
during the session of 1865–1866. He began his law practice in Lynchburg in 1866 and
continued in that practice until his death on 23 February 1907.
John H. LEWIS married 13 August 1873 Elizabeth Dabney LANGHORNE
(1851–1946), daughter of John Scarsbrooke LANGHORNE and Sarah Elizabeth
DABNEY.
