WILLIAM H. ADAMS, JR., WORLD WAR II COLLECTION (1943-1945)
The collection includes an article written by William H. Adams, Jr., reporter for United
Press, concerning Lt. William F. Draper, artist, and Draper’s experiences during the Amchitka
landing in May, 1943. Also included are five photographs of the landing at Amchitka Island, two
photographs of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, two photographs of the Commandants of the Allied
Kommandatura in session, several photographs taken in railroad station in Frankfurt, Germany
(1945), and one photograph of the dedication of the Soviet War Memorial in Berlin, Germany, 11
November 1945.

WILLIAM HOLCOMBE ADAMS, JR. (1910-1971)
William Holcombe Adams, Jr., son of William H. Adams, Sr., and Eva Smith, was born
30 March 1910, in Elk Horn, West Virginia. He graduated from the University of Virginia and
served with U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked as a journalist for United Press, Time
magazine, Chicago Daily News, and Charlottesville (Va.) Daily Progress. He married Ruby Buck
of Yancey County, North Carolina.
William Holcombe Adams, Jr., died 15 February 1971 in the Veterans Administration
Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, and was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, Lynchburg, Virginia.
