SCRAPBOOK OF THE COLLEGE STREET JOURNAL (1951-1952)
The collection includes mimeographed sheets of information on the current events on
College Street and the surrounding area in Lynchburg, Virginia. The journal was published by
three young residents of College Street, Terrell May, Neal Thompson, and John Candler as editors,
with Esley Myers (Mike) Higginbotham of Lakewood Street as reporter. There were at least 100
subscribers to the weekly publication at three cents per issue.
JOHN STAPLES CANDLER (1941- )
John Staples Candler, the son of Harry Louis Candler and Katherine Morris Johnson, was
born 17 Feb 1941, in Roanoke, Virginia. The family lived at 325 College Street in Lynchburg,
Virginia. He married Linda Hill Stansbury on 25 August 1962, in Lynchburg.
WESLEY TERRELL MAY, JR. (1940-2001)
Wesley Terrell May, Jr., son of Wesley T. May and Helen Louise Powell, was born 29 Oct
1940 in Lynchburg, Virginia. The family lived at 323 College Street. He married Jean Elizabeth
Phillips. He died 19 Nov 2001 and was buried at Fort Hill Memorial Park in Lynchburg.
ESLEY MYERS HIGGINBOTHAM, III (1939-2009)
Esley Myers (Mike) Higginbotham, III, son of Esley Myers Higginbotham, Jr. and Glennie
Virginia Bass, was born 24 December 1939 in Lynchburg, Virginia. The family lived on Lakewood
Street. He died 1 July 2009 in Reno, Nevada and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Reno.
FRANCIS NEAL THOMPSON (1940- )
Francis Neal Thompson, son of Dr. Maury Weldon Thompson and Mary Temple
Meacham, was born 21 October 1940 in New York. The family lived at 349 College Street. He
married (1) Patricia Jennings Turner 17 Nov 1961 and divorced 8 Feb 1982. He married (2) Sharon
Clay Griffin Poston on 8 May 1962.
