information on Laura Talbot Galt added by the library staff.
LAURA TALBOT GALT HYATT
Laura Talbot Galt was born 16 September 1888 in Corn Hill, Williamson County, Texas,
the daughter of Dr. John Galt and Mattie Ross. The family moved to Louisville, Jefferson County,
Kentucky, in 1890. As a student in 1901, her teacher asked the class to sing “Marching Through
Georgia.” Laura refused because of the words of the song concerning Sherman’s march through
Georgia. She was removed from school and was educated privately. She had a long career in
advertising and sales. She married Leonard Powell Hyatt on 24 January 1909, in Louisville,
Kentucky. She moved to Woodbourne, in Bedford County, Virginia, in 1943.
Laura Talbot Galt Hyatt died 24 June 1984, and was buried at St. Stephen’s Episcopal
Church, Forest, Virginia.
