COURT SUMMONS (1874-1880)
The collection includes three printed summons, issued by Samuel D. Preston, as Clerk of
Court, Lynchburg, Virginia:
1. Trustees of the heirs at law of William Daniel, Jr., deceased, against the creditors of
William Daniel, Jr., to appear to answer a bill in chancery presented by Elizabeth H. Daniel (31
March 1874)
2. Administrator of William Daniel, Jr., deceased, against the creditors of William Daniel,
Jr., to answer a bill in chancery presented by the Trustees under the terms of a deed of trust (13
April 1874)
3. Almon Echols and Benjamin Woody to answer W.T. Yancey and Edward H. Dillard,
executors of Charles Henry Lynch, deceased, of a plea of debt for $35.68 (29 December 1880)
SAMUEL DAVIS PRESTON (1834-1888)
Samuel Davis Preston was born 30 July 1834 in Bedford County, Virginia, the son of
Pleasant Preston and Annie E. Davis. He graduated in law from the University of Virginia during
the 1856-1857 session. He married Texanna G. Saunders, daughter of James W. Saunders and
Barbara G. Blair, on 5 December 1861, in Albemarle County, Virginia.
Preston served as a Captain in the Civil War. He joined the Lynchburg Guard and was
then commissioned to raise and command the Preston Company of Light Infantry.
Following the war, he returned to practice law in Lynchburg partnered with A.M. Trible.
He was chosen Chief of Police and served until 1870, when he was elected as Clerk of the
Corporation and Circuit Courts in Lynchburg. He served in that capacity until his death.
Samuel Davis Preston died 15 April 1888 and was buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery in
Lynchburg.
