Randolph-Macon Woman's College, and was graduated from Bryn Mawr College. She
received her Ph.D. degree in economics from the University of Berlin in 1907. [Obituary,

(Lewis) Otey Collection (hereinafter Otey Collection), MS1424, Jones Memorial Library, Lynchburg, VA;

Elizabeth L. LEWIS married Dexter OTEY on 4 June 1910 in Lynchburg, Virginia.
["Invitation," Otey Collection.]
Mrs. OTEY was an active suffragette. "All during the 1920s Mrs. OTEY was
preaching political and economic equality for men and women, always stressing the point
that equal rights bring equal responsibilities." [Harper, "Elizabeth Lewis," loc.cit.]
In 1921, Elizabeth OTEY ran for statewide office on the Republican ticket. Later she
was a candidate for the House of Delegates on the Socialist ticket. [Harper, "Elizabeth Lewis,"
loc.cit.]
Following the death of her husband, Elizabeth OTEY moved to Washington, D. C., to
work in the new Social Security Administration. She later worked in the State
Department until she retired in 1948. [Harper, "Elizabeth Lewis," loc.cit.]
During her retirement, Elizabeth OTEY lived with her daughter and son-in-law in
Taiwan. In 1965, they returned to Lynchburg, where Mrs. OTEY was active in several
organizations, including the Unitarian Church, the Colonial Dames, the Southern
Memorial Association, and was actively involved in work to restore Point of Honor.
[Harper, "Elizabeth Lewis," loc.cit.]
