CANTIERI BUSINESS PAPERS (1873-1894)
The collection includes business invoices, newspaper advertisements and business and
personal correspondence. Some correspondence is written in Italian.

BASILIO CANTIERI (1851-1894)
Basilio Cantieri was born 25 August 1851, in Luca, Tuscany, Italy, the son of Filippo
Cantieri. He emigrated to the United States and to Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1868. He began
working in the Castaglioni establishment in Lynchburg. He set up his own business in 1872 at
the Diamond Saloon, later establishing a saloon and restaurant at the Lynch House in Lynchburg
in 1883. He married Florence Jaccheri on 18 April 1888, Lexington, Virginia. He continued
operating his business interests until his death on 18 January 1894. He was buried in Spring Hill
Cemetery, Lynchburg.
