THE BELLE HAVEN INN (SARASOTA, FLORIDA)
Built by J.H. Gillespie in 1887, the De Soto Hotel contained thirty rooms, a large lobby,
and a dining room – a place for “those of wealth and influence. In 1902, the hotel was sold to
Southern Investment Company. Improvements were made and the name was changed to Belle
Haven Inn. A new wing was added in 1911. H. S. Smith, proprietor, around 1912.
Photograph on sixth page features several people with the day’s catch of fish. Among
those pictured is Howell C. Featherston of Lynchburg, Virginia.
