County for 20 years and was chairman for eight years. He was elected to the Virginia

The News, December 13, 1961 [B-11-1]
Former Campbell Official Dies
Everdell Altamont Hicks, 99, former chairman of the Campbell County Board
of Supervisors and former member of the Virginia General Assembly, died at 6:25
p.m. Thursday at his home in Evington. He served on the board of supervisors from
1900 to 1920, being chairman the last 10 years. Then he was a member of the
Virginia House of Delegates of the General Assembly from 1920 to 1930.
A lifetime resident of Campbell County, Hicks continued to supervise the
operation of his 300 acre farm. In addition, he was a representative for the VirginiaCarolina Chemical Co. selling fertilizer in this area.
In a feature story in The News soon after he observed his 99th birthday on Feb.
13. Hicks recalled how he helped John Lane, father of the Town of Altavista, pile a
marker of rocks at a point that is now the center of the community.
Hicks accompanied Lane on several trips through the area laying out what was
to become the town of Altavista. Later, as chairman of the Campbell County Board
of Supervisors, he recommended construction of some of the roads suggested by
Lane and so contributed to the founding of Altavista and the development of the
entire area.
Born in Campbell County, he was the son of James Westmoreland and Mildred
Hicks Hicks. He was a member of Evington Methodist Church and Evington
Masonic Lodge No. 333, AF&AM.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Minnie Patrick Hicks; three sons, Ray Landon
Hicks of McLean, E. A. Hicks Jr. of Cave Springs and Gerald Westmoreland Hicks
of Richmond; two daughters, Dr. Mildred Hicks Bruun of Easton, Pa. and Mrs.
Henry M. Taylor of Lamesa, Calif, and four grandchildren.
The body is at Whitten Timberlake Chapel pending funeral arrangements.
