LINDSEY COLEMAN (ca. 1786/88-1876) PAPERS
The COLEMAN papers include over 600 items dating from 1789 until 1911, with
the bulk being from 1810-1850. The collection includes 95 letters and over 260 accounts.
Also included are tax receipts, the papers of the Mt. Moriah Debating Club and the Mt.
Moriah Sunday School, and a jailor's account book (1817-1832).

Lindsey COLEMAN, of Amherst County, Virginia, was born between 1786 and 1788.
According to census records, he was born ca. 1786/1787. [1850 Census, Amherst County, VA,

County, VA, NARS, M-653, Roll 1332, p. 325 (age 73); 1870 Census, Amherst County, VA, NARS, M593, Roll 1633, p. 552 (age 84).]

Lindsey COLEMAN died 14 May 1876, aged 88 years, in Amherst County, Virginia.

indicate a birth year of ca. 1788.

Lindsey COLEMAN was the son of George COLEMAN and Judith HARRIS. [Death

1984).]
Lindsey COLEMAN married, first, Nancy TALIAFERRO, date unknown. [Coleman,
Some Descendants...] He married, secondly, Isabella G. READ, of Bedford County,
Virginia, on 27 May 1830. ["Marriages of Bedford County, Virginia," William Wade Hinshaw,
Encyclopedia Of American Quaker Genealogy (Ann Arbor, MI: Edwards Brothers, 1950), p. 895.]

Lindsey COLEMAN operated a tavern in Amherst between 1820 and 1832.

Lindsey COLEMAN was Sheriff of Amherst County in 1849 and again in 1850.

In his will, Lindsey COLEMAN names children: Joseph COLEMAN, Charles T.
COLEMAN, Lucy Ellen SMITH [later ROYSTER], William E. COLEMAN, Mary
MASSIE, and Richard M. COLEMAN. He also names grandchildren: Alvin Prince
ROBERTS, Janetta E. COLEMAN, and Alice V. STRATTON ("free from
husband" Alex B. STRATTON). [Ibid., pp. 77-78.]
