THE ANNE SPENCER MEMORIAL FOUNDATION, INC.
The Anne Spencer Memorial Foundation, Inc., was formed to assist in preserving
and maintaining the Virginia Historic Landmark known as The Anne Spencer House,
including the main house, “Edenkraal” (the one room cottage-study), the garden, and
related properties, as a museum and research center. The group also developed educational
programs dealing with Anne Spencer, her life, her poetry, her friends, as well as the
sociological and cultural framework of which she was an integral part. It also promoted
and encouraged the development of poets and writers through sponsorship of writing
contests in local schools.
The Anne Spencer Memorial Foundation, Inc., was incorporated as a non-stock
corporation on October 22, 1985, as successor to The Friends of Anne Spencer Memorial
Foundation, Inc. The Friends group was incorporated in 1976 and the property at 1313
Pierce Street, Lynchburg, the former home of Anne Spencer (1882-1975), was conveyed
by Chauncey Spencer and wife to the Friends. The Friends group was dissolved as a
Virginia corporation on June 1, 1986, and the directors and officers became trustees of the
assets. In a law suit (1989-1992), the property eventually came under the administration of
the Anne Spencer Memorial Foundation, Inc.
