P.E.O. SISTERHOOD, VIRGINIA STATE CHAPTER
The P.E.O. Sisterhood, founded January 21, 1869, at Iowa Wesleyan College,
Mount Pleasant, Iowa, is a philanthropic and educational organization interested in
bringing to women increased opportunities for higher education. There are approximately
6,000 local chapters in the United States and Canada with more than 250,000 active
members.
The educational and philanthropic purposes of P.E.O. are accomplished through
international, state and local projects. The projects include the P.E.O. Educational Loan
Fund, Cottey College, P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship Fund, P.E.O. Program for
Continuing Education, and P.E.O. Scholar Awards.
The Virginia State Chapter was formed on June 29, 1949. There are 72 chapters
and approximately 2500 members throughout the state. The Virginia Chapter has its own
Virginia Scholarship Fund for Virginia residents who are attending Virginia colleges and
universities.
