SAMUEL MILLER (1792-1869)
Samuel MILLER, the son of Jane (or Jennie) MILLER, was born 30 June 1792, in
Albemarle County, Virginia. He came to Lynchburg at the age of eighteen to work for a
merchant. By the time he reached the age of thirty-one years, he had amassed a large
fortune. He founded the Lynchburg Female Orphan Asylum. He died 27 March 1869 in
Lynchburg. In his will he devised property to the City of Lynchburg for the
establishment of Miller Park and for the construction of the College Hill Reservoir. He
also left an endowment for the establishment of the Miller Manual Labor School in
Albemarle County.
