LETTER FROM JAMES CHALMERS TO HIS MOTHER, MRS. S.E.
CHALMERS
The letter was written by Chalmers at Fauquier Springs [VA], 6 August, N.y., to his
mother, Mrs. S[arah]. E. [Coleman] Chalmers of Halifax Court House, VA. He is hoping
his visit to the springs will improve his health and sends news about relatives.
There is included on the last page a note from Fanny Chalmers concerning relatives.
The letter predates 26 January 1852, when Mrs. Sara E. Chalmers died in Halifax
County, Virginia, at age 42.
JAMES CHALMERS
James Chalmers, the son of David and Sarah E. Coleman Chalmers of Halifax County,
Virginia, was born in 1829. He attended Chapel Hill & the University of Virginia. He
married Fannie M. Saunders on 8 December 1852, in Lynchburg. During the Civil War
Chalmers, a Lynchburg attorney and tobacconist, served as a sergeant in the Wise Troop,
2nd Virginia Cavalry.
On 1 October 1861, James Chalmers was wounded and died at Fairfax Court House,
Virginia.
