BURFORD FAMILY ACCOUNT BOOKS
The collection includes the account books of Petticus D. BURFORD and of his son,
William D. BURFORD, who were undertakers in Amherst County, Virginia. The
accounts are records of payments for coffins and burials.

PETTICUS D. BURFORD (ca.1844/1848-1903)
Petticus D. BURFORD, son of William BURFORD and Elizabeth BOWLING,
was born ca. 1844-1848 in Amherst County, Virginia. He married 20 October 1885
Alice T. CARTER, daughter of Richard CARTER and Mary DAWSON of Amherst
County. According to his tombstone, BURFORD served in Shoemaker's Company,
Virginia Horse Artillery, during the Civil War. He began his undertaking business ca.
1893. He died in 1903 in Amherst County. In his will, he asked that his executor, A. H.
TURNER, continue the undertaking business at Monitor in Amherst County, with
BURFORD's son, William D. BURFORD, as manager. Petticus D. BURFORD was
buried in the BURFORD family cemetery.

WILLIAM DUVAL BURFORD (1887-1965)
William Duval BURFORD, son of Petticus D. BURFORD and Alice T.
CARTER, was born 17 January 1887, in Amherst County, Virginia. Following his
father's death in 1903, he became manager of the undertaking business established by his
father in ca. 1893. He married 12 April 1905 in Amherst County Emma C. HUDSON,
daughter of Benjamin Franklin HUDSON and Mary A. SCURRY. BURFORD served as
a supervisor for the Courthouse District in Amherst County for thirty years and was
chairman of the Welfare Board in Amherst for twenty-two years. He died 12 November
1965 and was buried in the Amherst Cemetery.
