CALISTA ROSSER CRALLE LONG (1808-1841) JOURNAL
This typescript of a journal, entitled "Journal of a Journey from Virginia to Kentucky,"
was prepared by Anne Lilliott LONG. The original journal was kept by Calista
Rosser (CRALLE) LONG on her move from Campbell County, Virginia, to Union
County, Kentucky, and covers the period of December 1836 to January 1837. The
journal also includes a biographical sketch of her son, John Cralle LONG (1833-1894),
who lived in Kentucky and Virginia, and genealogical notes on the LONG family.
CALISTA ROSSER (CRALLE) LONG (1808-1841)
Calista Rosser CRALLE, daughter of Lindsay CRALLE and Nancy ROSSER, was
born 4 September 1808. She married 4 October 1824 Armistead LONG, son of
Armistead LONG and Elizabeth Burgess BALL. She died 16 June 1841 in Kentucky.

JOHN CRALLE LONG (1833-1894)
John Cralle LONG, son of Armistead LONG and Calista CRALLE, was born 28
November 1833, in Campbell County, Virginia. A Baptist minister, he was graduated
from Richmond College in 1856 and taught at Florida State Seminary in 1857. He
married 19 October 1858 Josephine Hardin RAGLAND, daughter of Nathaniel Hardin
RAGLAND and Sallie MASSIE of Richmond. He was pastor of the Cumberland Street
Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia, before the Civil War. During the War, he lived in
Goochland County with his family. He also taught in Danville in 1863 to support his
family. After the War, the family moved to Scottsville. In 1868, LONG became pastor
of the Charlottesville Church. In 1875, he became a professor at the Crozer Theological
Seminary in Chester, Pennsylvania, and taught there for nineteen years. He died 6 August
1894 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
