DIAMOND HILL
The boundaries of Lynchburg's Diamond Hill roughly include from the Lynchburg
Expressway to Twelfth Street, up Grace & 14th Streets to Wise Street and back down to
the James River. Some of the streets within that area are Diamond, Opal, Pearl,
Washington, Grace, Locust, Chestnut, & Plum, along with the eastern portions of
Jackson, Madison, Harrison, Polk, Taylor, Monroe, and Wise.
The origin of the name is unknown and is the subject of speculation. One such
suggestion is that the name was used due to the triangular shaped lots along the Campbell
County Courthouse Turnpike.
SOURCE: Ruth H. Blunt, "The Seven Hills of Lynchburg," Lynchburg, IV (JanuaryFebruary 1972), p.19.
[It has also been suggested that the name "Diamond Hill" may have been given to the
home of Edward Lynch, which was in the vicinity. Lynch used the name for his home in
Ohio.]
