NATURAL BRIDGE APPALACHIAN TRAIL CLUB
The Appalachian Trail began in New England in 1922. By 1925, the Appalachian
Trail Conference had been organized in Washington, D.C. The Lions Club of
Lynchburg, Virginia, sought to organize and sponsor a trail club for the area, and on 2
October 1930, the Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club was organized, with Ruskin S.
FREER as first president.
The original purposes of the Club were to complete the main Appalachian Trail, to
build side trails and to construct shelters and campsites along the trail in the Blue Ridge
Mountains nearby. The entire Appalachian Trail was completed in 1937. With the
construction of the Blue Ridge Parkway, however, many sections of the trail needed to be
relocated.
In 1987, the Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club hosted a meeting of the
Appalachian Trail Conference at Lynchburg College.
Today, the Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club maintains an 88-mile section of the
Appalachian Trail and works to preserve the remaining wilderness areas along the trail.
